Geese and rain on new years day

On New Years Day we took a walk in Greenwood Cemetary, where Basquiat an Asher B. Durand (among others) are buried and where a flock of parrots, adapted to NYC temperature, live in gothic spires. There was also a flock of geese waddling among the tombs. The walk reminded me of getting lost with G. and H. this summer in Cimietre Pere Lachaisse in Paris, not finding Oscar Wilde’s tomb and wandering around for awhile until we found an exit. I’m starting to realize I like the aesthetics of umbrellas.

Crafting Antlers

Last week I had my neighbors over for some impromtu crafting. It was really fun to spread out all our art supplies on the floor, remind each other how to knit, distract LJ from her studies, eat amazing homemade vegan gingerbread cookies and feel like actually our community here in Brooklyn is cozily small. The other cool thing is that C. comes from the town next over from mine, so it was fun to catch up about Maine and share memories from growing up there.

DJ Vintage’s Dancers at Brooklyn Museum First Saturday

I was really happy that some of my photos were deemed worthy to go on the Brooklyn Museum’s flickr account, including this one! You can find the Brooklyn Museum on flickr and see more photos from First Saturday, including a marriage proposal. It’s really nice to see evidence of this great community event we work so hard on every month going out to the wider world.

Cafe Regular

After a few months of neglecting this cafe O. and I had the same thought, “We haven’t gone to cafe regular in a long time!” so we did on a Saturday morning before work (for me). Great coffee and good pastries and a tiny inside that reminds you of Paris picked up and moved to Brooklyn. On 11th street in Park Slope between 5th and 4th.

The Shondes as Brooklyn Lyceum

Last Friday The Shondes played in the historic and cavernous Brooklyn Lyceum. Due to troubles with a rock show there the previous week (or something…) they had to keep the noise below 90 decibles, but they still sounded awesome, energetic and passionate and I could finally hear everything- violin, vocals, all of it! Visit their website at http://www.shondes.com for more information about their upcoming shows.

Andi came over after our co-op shift to borrow me and LJ’s cowgirl stuff… here she is with LJ’s hat and my shirt and bandanna (the red books and horse belt buckle are not shown). I guess all that’s missing is a horse and had we been in Maine I could have leant her that too… the cat mask is my Halloween fall back, but this year I only wore it for pictures.

Perils at Rocks in Your Head

Perils played a really fun show with our “big sister” band Full Tank on Wednesday at Rocks in Your Head record store in Williamsburg. Before the show even started I bought a Pastels CD I have been coveting for 5 years (and it’s just as good as when I listened to it in my room when I first moved to Portland, Oregon and was 19 and over the top crazy). From this photo, though Yumi is blocked by Maggie, you can see that Perils prefers to play (or only can afford) Fender squire guitars. And yes, that is the Transformers movie in the background. Many thanks for friends who came out (and those of you who say “I didn’t know you played a show” it’s because we didn’t play any new songs, so I didn’t want to wear out our welcome so to speak).

Brooklyn Magic Hour

This is one of the reasons I am glad I carry my camera around. I am obcessed by light and sky recently. Every sunny morning I can be heard saying “look at the light, look at the light.” The fall seems to lend itself to particularly clear and dramatic light. This is, concidentally, the building where Perils used to practice in.
